David E. Gomes, 74, passed on August 5, 2023 at his home in Venice, Florida. He was the husband of the late Cheryl A. (Fontaine) Gomes. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Julio T. and Elsie (Barber) Gomes.
After graduating from RIC, he began his career as a Social Worker for youth. David became a Providence Police Officer then trained and went into the K9 unit retiring in 1986. After a short stay at home he worked for Herff Jones for many years as the company driver. David was a longtime East Providence resident. He and Cheryl always dreamed of living in the sunshine, and near the ocean so after many vacations to Florida, that is where they decided to retire to. David was a Marine Veteran of the Vietnam War.
He had such a love for dogs, they were a huge part of his life and career. Always smiling and having a huge heart, he truly touched and impacted so many people’s lives. Fishing was always his favorite hobby and was a diehard New York Giants fan.
He loved his family dearly, and is survived by his by two daughters, Kyla Gomes and Jessica Desorcy husband Michael, a son, Ian Gomes and his wife Kait, grandchildren, Caitlin, Eve, Benjamin, Jackson, Juliana, Declan, Saoirse, and Eamon, his sisters, Nancy, Brenda, Donna, Marsha, Kim, and Robin, his former wife Jean Henry, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Linda. David made several dear friends in Florida that became family to him, John and Barbara, Eileen and Lulu, Rich, and Chris and Michelle. He will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 4pm until 7pm in the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave., Lincoln, RI. Burial with military honors will be held, Wednesday August 16, 2023 at 11am in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. In lieu of flowers, donation to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
